Lipedema News This Week: Quality-of-Life Research, a World Congress in Rome, and Boots Made for Real Calves

A little scoop of hope for the week of October 26 to November 2: researchers tracking how daily care feels (not just what the scale says), advocates raising their voices in Rome, and a boot collection built with four calf widths for real legs. Here’s what caught our eye.

New research

A study published October 29 in the journal Phlebology followed 86 women through six months of conservative care—things like compression, lymphatic drainage, and movement. The researchers reported real quality-of-life improvements that didn’t depend on weight change. They also note that controlled studies are still needed, which is a fair and important caveat.

Separately, Gazi University researchers tested a Turkish version of a lipedema screening questionnaire (October 30). Their work found very consistent results, which could help more women get recognized sooner—wherever they live.

Awareness events

Lipoedema UK was in Rome for the International Lymphoedema Framework World Congress (October 28–31). Their Chair, Sharie Fetzer, spoke at the Patient Association Day—another reminder that patient voices belong at the center of these conversations.

Insurance and diagnosis

It was a quieter week on the policy front. The Lipedema Foundation still expects U.S. diagnosis codes specifically for lipedema to take effect October 1, 2027. The Lymphedema Advocacy Group notes that a code is a meaningful first step toward coverage, but it won’t make treatments covered automatically. Progress, with more work ahead.

New clothing for larger legs

In a Who What Wear feature from October 31, Lauren Chan shared her picks from Naturalizer’s Contoured Calf boots. The collection offers four calf widths, up to an extra-wide 19–21 inches—options many shoppers with larger calves have been asking for. Chan is Naturalizer’s paid ambassador, so this is a sponsored edit. If boots are on your list, we’d look at reviews from plus-size and wide-calf shoppers before you buy—every leg (and every day) is different.
